DPCC decrees: Sonia to nominate chief
The newly-elected delegates of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) on Monday passed a resolution authorising Congress president Sonia Gandhi to nominate new members of the All-India Congress Committee and also the president of the DPCC.
The organisational elections, which are held every three years, have paved the way for a fresh appointment to the post of the DPCC president.
However, party sources maintained that the current incumbent, Mr J.P. Agrawal, who is also an MP from the north-east Delhi parliamentary constituency, may be allowed to continue.
DPCC functionaries said that Monday’s exercise was part of the organisational culture, which takes place every three years right from the top level to the lower units of the organisation. The meeting, in which the resolution was passed, was also attended by Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and Mr Agrawal, who seconded the proposal for authorising Ms Gandhi to nominate the state unit chief.
Party sources maintained that Mr Agrawal, who has been the DPCC president for the past three years, may be allowed to continue.
However, the final decision rests with the party high command.
Mr Agrawal held the position during two crucial elections, that of the Assembly and the Lok Sabha, which saw the party emerge strongly in the state.
