Durga Puja celebrations hit a crescendo
The Durga Puja celebrations, which have been low key on account of the Commonwealth Games this year, are likely to reach boisterous culmination on Sunday with the immersion of idols and Dussehra celebrations in the evening.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi will attend the Dussehra celebrations at the Ramlila grounds where the effigies of Ravan, Meghnad and Kumbhkaran will be burnt to mark the death of the demons and the victory of good over evil. The two Congress leaders will also pick up bows and point their arrows towards the effigies, which will then be set afire.
The police has made arrangements to ensure that idol immersion in Yamuna does not lead to any chaos. The Delhi administration too has made arrangements to see to it that there is no confusion about immersion of idols in the river.
Having started during the Games, the Durga Puja celebrations, along with Ramlilas, have been low key on account of security restrictions. In fact, in Rajouri Garden, the security agencies had allowed less space for making of effigies of Ravan, Meghnad and Kumbhkaran.
At many places, the annual “melas” also got underway only in the last couple of days. Several stall owners also complained of having sustained losses due to the tight security.
