Film festival tackles disability issues
The eighth edition of “We Care Film Fest” — an annual international festival of documentary films on disability issues was launched on Thursday at the United Nations Information Centre here.
The festival was launched by Brotherhood, a Delhi-based non-governmental organisation, in 2003. The festival was launched in the presence of its founder partners — Brotherhood, the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan (UNIC), Unesco, the National Trust which functions under the social empowerment ministry, Government of India, and the Asian Academy of Film and Television (AAFT).
It has since become a unique advocacy and educational tool, seeking to bring about attitudinal and behavioural changes in approaches to disability, promote the inclusion of people with disabilities, and rid people of misconceptions, myths and prejudices surrounding disability issues. The festival will travel to various universities and educational institutions across India and other countries.
This year, a total number of 67 documentary films in four categories — up to one minute, up to five minutes, up to 30 minutes, and up to 75 minutes — from India , USA, Canada, Israel, the UK, Indonesia, Spain, Italy, Brazil, Australia, and Nepal among others, will be exhibited.
The festival will travel to 25 venues across India and the Saarc countries (Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan) from January to May 2011.
