Fire hits power supply
Several areas in West Delhi plunged into darkness on Tuesday evening after a major transformer caught fire in the area, forcing authorities to shut a 220KV transmission line.
Lights went out in Rohini, Pitampura, Mongolpuri and adjoining localities at around 6.50 pm after the 100 mega volt ampere transformer at Rohini grid of Delhi Transsco Ltd caught fire. DTL, which maintains all the transmission network in the city, switched off their equipment at the grid as safety precaution.
Asked about the incident, a DTL official said an investigation has been ordered into the incident and exact reason for the blaze is yet to be ascertained. He said efforts are on to restore the power supply in the area by late Tuesday night.
The fire could not be doused till 8.30 pm although eight fire tenders have been pressed into service, he said adding supply of power through the 220 KV line has been totally shut down following the incident.
Meanwhile, various areas in the city faced power cuts for upto two hours due to gap in demand and supply of electricity due to cut supply from the central sector generation plants. — PTI
