Fiscal woes: 3 of family kill selves

Three members of a family took their lives due to domestic and financial problems at Rajouri Garden in west Delhi on Friday.

The deceased, identified as Vijay Kumar, 60, who owned a car accessories shop in Gurgaon, his wife Neena, 53, and daughter Sonia, 18. The family was staying in a rented accommodation on the third floor of a building.
According to the police, the incident came to light when Kumar’s friend came to meet him and as there was no response. He went to the landlady Mamta and informed her.
“Mamta came and knocked the door but could not elicit a response. She informed Kumar’s son Sandeep who stays separately. He came and peeped through the window and saw that his family had committed suicide,” a senior police official said.
He then informed the police. Neena was found in one room while Kumar and his daughter were in another room. All had slit wrists. After slitting his wrist, Kumar hung himself.
A suicide note was recovered from the house in which Kumar claimed that he could not do much for his wife and daughter and that he could not justify his existence. He sought forgiveness from his relatives and friends for his act.
The landlady Mamta told the police that Kumar had taken loans from banks and some friends. Investigators suspect that financial problems might have led to the suicides.
Asked whether Kumar murdered his wife and daughter and then committed suicide, the official said prima facie, it did not appear so as the scene does not suggest so. A case has been registered and bodies have been sent for post-mortem.
In a separate incident, a 50-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide in Sultanpuri Friday morning. She was apparently depressed over her daughters not getting married.
“Emarti Devi was found hanging in her house. She was under depression as the family was not able to get their six daughters married,” the official said. A case has been registered and investigation is on.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
