Flood threat halts Games Village work
The flood threat has forced stoppage of work at the Commonwealth Games Village. Rising Yamuna water level has forced the Delhi government to ask civic agencies to stop work at the Commonwealth Games Village near Akshardham.
Though water has not come up to the bandh that has been created on the side of the river to keep its water at bay, the work has been stopped as a precautionary measure with the water level set to rise further.
The project is said to be in the finishing stages and furnishing of the flats is going on.
Environmentalists had earlier warned that the site for the Games Village was not appropriate as it was being built on the flood plains of Yamuna and water could enter it if the river gets swollen. A bandh was constructed to keep the water at bay but now the authorities are keeping a close watch as the water level continues to rise.
Sources in the Delhi government have confirmed that a notice has been issued and the DDA and the Games Village Committee will be asked to stop the finishing work in Akshardham area for some time.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Games Village Committee, S.S Dhindsa on Tuesday stated, “An inspection team will be sent to the Akshardham Games Project area site on Wednesday for another review to see when the work can be resumed again.”
The Delhi government’s order to stop work at the Akshardham area has come a day after the Yamuna river started flowing above the danger mark.
The decision to issue an advisory was taken on Monday when 34,600 cusecs of water was released from Hathnikund barrage upstream in Haryana.
