Fog-blinded driver hit by truck, killed
The foggy weather prevailing in the city took the life of a 40-year-old driver while four passengers were injured when a speeding truck rammed into their SUV on a flyover in central Delhi on Saturday night.
The incident took place on the Ring Road flyover near Rajghat at around 2.30 am, the police said.
A Mahindra Scorpio carrying four passengers was on the way when the driver jumped the vehicle into a wrong lane and failed to notice an incoming truck apparently due to dense fog. “The truck was coming from the other side and the two vehicles had a head-on collision. The truck driver had tried to avoid the accident,” a senior police official said.
The driver of the Scorpio, identified as Umesh Singh, was fatally injured while four others suffered minor injuries.
The impact of the collision turned the Scorpio into a mangled mess.
“After the accident, the truck rammed into the railing of the flyover and skidded. But luckily, it did not fall off,” the official said.
The police said a PCR call was made by one of the injured passengers and Singh and the four others were rushed to a nearby hospital where Singh was declared brought dead while the condition of two is stated to be “critical”. Two others have been declared stable.
“It appears as if the driver of Scorpio was not able to spot the truck coming from the other side due to heavy fog in night. The truck driver was also speeding and failed to avoid the crash. We have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the truck driver,” the official said.
