Reduced visibility on the city roads due to dense fog claimed two lives on Wednesday morning when a 30-year-old truck driver and the son of his employer were killed in a major truck pileup in east Delhi’s Geeta Colony area.
The police said another truck driver was seriously injured when six trucks crashed into each other in Geeta Colony at the accident site.
The mishap took place at around 3.15 am on main Geeta Colony road near the cremation ground apparently due to dense fog. The deceased have been identified as Moolchand, the truck driver, and Rahul Kumar, 20, the son of his employer.
Rahul’s father, Chhote Lal, was standing near the spot when his only son was crushed between two mini-trucks.
“Moolchand and Rahul were retying a rope to tow their mini-truck to another one when a speeding truck rammed them from behind near the Geeta Colony cremation ground. The rope had got detached and they were retying it when the accident occurred. The impact of the hit was so powerful that Rahul and Moolchand got crushed between the two trucks and died on the spot,” a senior police official said.
In the meantime, three more trucks rammed into each other due to poor visibility on the road causing a major truck pileup. The driver of the fourth truck, identified as Hashim, 30, was badly hurt in the accident. The victims were rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in a PCR van where the doctors declared Rahul and Moolchand brought dead. Hashim, who suffered injuries in his chest and legs, is undergoing treatment at the hospital and his condition is said to be stable.
“While drivers of the last two trucks fled from the spot with their vehicles immediately after the accident, the police has impounded the other four trucks. The errant driver of the truck fled from the spot leaving behind his vehicle. Efforts are being made to nab him,” a senior officer added.
