G. Noida expressway shut 2 days
With the Greater Noida Expressway being closed for preparations of CWG cycling event, commuters in the National Capital Region (NCR) on Tuesday experienced problems in reaching their destinations in the capital from Noida and Greater Noida. The Expressway will remain closed till October 14.
While there were no major jams on the arterial roads, people had to spend long time coming to Delhi.
“Had the Expressway been open, it would have taken barely 45 minutes for me to reach Delhi. But today it is going to take around two to three hours,” said Mr M.K. Goel, who was on his way to a hospital where his acquaintance was admitted. Many others had to take the normal route to come to Delhi from Greater Noida.
The blocking of the Expressway was necessary to ensure that there was no traffic or pedestrian movements that could create problems for the cyclists. Cycling and marathon are usually considered high interest sports and are traditionally held on the last day of the Games.
However, the cycling event that was conducted in Connaught Place this past Saturday had raised the concerns of the Commonwealth Games Federation as the number of spectators were very less.
In order to ensure that there were more spectators at these events, the organisers have decided to install giant video screens at public places. Also, more than 10 spectator holding areas will be created on the Expressway. Each of these holding areas may accommodate at least 500 people.
