Games lane violators to be fined `2,000
With less than a month left for the Commonwealth Games, the Delhi police has made elaborate plans to ensure a smooth flow traffic in the city during the mega-event.
“All road users should avoid getting into the dedicated lane meant for athletes and if inadvertently they enter the lane, they should come out of it or else face a fine of `
2000/impounding of vehicle. The police is also initiating a special drive to create awareness among people to give way to emergency vehicles or else pay a fine of `100. There will be a total ban on marriage processions on roads during the Games,” special commissioner (traffic) Ajay Chadda said.
Mr Chadda said the dedicated lane is part of the contract entered into by host city and Games Federation. “In the first two days, the traffic police may not invoke penal provisions so as to educate people about the exclusive lane for the Games. There will be zero tolerance towards violations. Our motto is zero tolerance and maximum prosecution,” he said.
The police is likely to initiate a group of measures in coming days which will help in streamlining the flow of traffic.
“Emphasis should be on using Metro as a primary mode of transportation. For this, additional parking will be available at Metro stations and various media will be used for disseminating traffic related information during the Games. A mass awareness campaign to elicit public cooperation will also be launched soon,” Mr Chadda said. “The extreme left lanes of the roads from Games Village to various venues will be designated as exclusive Games lanes,” Chadda said.
