Games Village to be handed over Aug. 1

The Delhi Development Authority and the private developers of the Commonwealth Games Village are now in the wrap-up mode with Delhi lieutenant governor Tejendra Khanna on Tuesday announcing that the village will be handed over to the Organising Committee (OC) on August 1, which was the deadline given by the DDA. The construction of the Village had started in January 2008 but the pace was affected following litigation and economic recession.

The L-G, who visited the site for the second time within 10 days, told mediapersons that the project would handed over to the OC on time. While the towers have already been completed, it was the development of the green area on the front side of the Village, facing NH 24, that had caused some concerns. “The L-G expressed satisfaction at the fact that a lot of debris and pre-fab structure had been removed and the area was now available for greening,” a Raj Niwas official said, adding that the area housed a 6,000 strong labour force.
Sources said that clearing of the front area requires removal of labour camps, which had been created to accommodate them, as they worked day and night to complete the project in time. In the 10 days since the L-G paid his earlier visit, nearly 350 truckloads of temporary structures and debris has been cleared, said an official. Considering that the bid for Commonwealth Games was won in 2003 but the construction was started only in 2008, it was virtually a rare feat, added the official.
The task of furnishing the building and put the furniture in place, which is being done by the Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), has already begun. ITDC head Sanjay Kothari, who was also present during the L-G’s visit, presented him with the details of the furnishing scheme.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
