Ghaziabad DM warns khap men
The members of the khap panchayat in Sikanderpur Kakod village of Ghaziabad, from where a same-gotra couple were asked to leave or face consequences, have been warned by the district administration to not take law into their hands.
The district magistrate of Ghaziabad, Hridesh Kumar, has directed all the panchayat members to undertake a bond by depositing personal sureties of Rs 1 lakh each against taking the law into their hands.
Earlier, the couple Sheetal (21) and Sudhir (24), both belonging to same gotra, had sought protection from the police after being threatened by the villagers of dire consequences. The villagers had asked the girl to tie rakhi to the boy and accept him as brother, or else leave the village. Subsequently, the couple approached the police. SP (rural), M.M. Baig maintained that the couple would be given adequate protection and additional force has been deployed in the village to prevent anybody from taking law into their hands.
The khap panchayat members, meanwhile, have decided to hold a mahapanchayat next week on the issue and decide on the further course of action.
