Girl sets self ablaze, priest alerts police
A Class 11 student of a government school is reported to have committed self-immolation at her Khajuri Khas residence in northeast Delhi.
The incident took place at around 6 am on Thursday when the victim, identified as Mamta, 17, went to the roof of her Pehla Pushta, Sonia Vihar residence poured
kerosene and then set herself afire. The police said the victim, a student of Khajuri Khas Government School was suffering from depression and had attempted to kill herself last month by jumping into the Yamuna.
The incident came to light on Thursday evening when the victim’s family members, including her father Suran Singh, took her corpse to a cremation site in Wazirabad.
However, when the priest at the cremation site, Hari Prasad Shukla, asked the family as how the victim had died, the family members started giving conflicting statements.
“The priest became suspicious and he lifted the burial garment from the body and found the victim badly charred. He then confronted the family and made a call to the police control room. A team of policemen arrived at the spot and the body was sent for post-mortem. The family members of the victim were also questioned,” a senior police official said.
“The victim was suffering from depression since the last three months and had attempted to kill herself last month. It appears that she committed suicide but we are waiting for the post-mortem report before any action is taken. No foul play is suspected so far,” the official said.
