Govt assures HC of aid to rape victims
The Union of India on Wednesday told the Delhi high court that it will soon announce a policy to provide financial compensation to rape victims.
Additional Solicitor-General A.S. Chandhiok, appearing for the Centre, told a division bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna that guidelines to rehabilitate rape victims were also being considered by the Central government.
After hearing from the top law officer that the matter was with the government, Chief Justice Misra asked him to follow it up. To this, Mr Chandhiok said, that the policy was already in the pipeline. Pawan Sharma, standing counsel for the city government, said, “Once the guidelines come to us, we will notify the central policy and implement it.”
The city government, which on Wednesday sought more time from the court on the issue, has so far not framed any guidelines for granting compensation to rape victims.
