Govt to crack whip on illegal colonies

The Delhi Cabinet on Monday decided to crack whip against illegal constructions coming up in unauthorised colonies. The Cabinet has decided to fix accountability with concerned officials if illegal construction takes place in their jurisdiction.
The city government also cautioned people buying properties in illegal colonies in the capital by stating that they would invite demolition. The government will take strict action against builders and officials in this regard.
Expressing concern at the misuse of agricultural land, particularly in Narela where some government officials allegedly in nexus with builders had sold the plots to unsuspecting buyers, the Cabinet decided to crack the whip against officials and builders.
The government has also clarified that apart from the 1,639 unauthorised colonies, which have applied for regularisation, the rest of the illegal colonies will be under scrutiny for illegal construction.
“Strict action will be taken against unauthorised construction on agricultural land and extension of 1,639 unauthorised colonies,” Delhi revenue minister Rajkumar Chauhan told reporters.
In Narela area, the state anti-corruption bureau (ACB) has recently registered an FIR against a dozen builders and officials of the revenue department, DDA, MCD and the Delhi police for allegedly dividing the land into small plots and selling them to unsuspecting buyers.
The minister cautioned people from investing their hard-earned money in such deals. He also added that it has also been decided to take appropriate action against the officers who are found negligent in preventing such construction.
“The Cabinet has taken a serious view of unauthorised construction which is bound to damage planned growth of the city. It is time to disseminate a crystal clear message that not even a single new unauthorised colony will be allowed, in any way, to come up in the capital ,” Mr Chauhan told reporters.
The minister referred to a committee constituted by lieutenant-governor Tejendra Khanna to monitor the growth of unauthorised construction in the city and to ensure immediate appropriate action.
The committee comprises the concerned DC (Revenue), DCP, DC (MCD) and a senior officer from DDA Land Protection Branch.
