Govt failed to curb veggie prices: BJP
Delhi BJP on Saturday charged that the city government has failed to check prices of vegetables. Delhi BJP chief Vijendra Gupta has charged that the onion, tomato and other vegetable prices at Mother Dairy outlets are higher than in the retail markets in the city.
Mr Gupta charged that by the time food items reach the common man, they become 15 to 20 times costlier. “The farmers who came to Mandi said that they are being paid only `8 per kg for onion, but this onion is being sold at `60 per kg. This is the condition of other vegetables also,” alleged Mr Gupta.
He said that vegetables are being purchased from farmers at dirt cheap rates but sold to consumers at high rates. “This is being done with the full knowledge of Delhi government,” Mr Gupta said. Mentioning prices of vegetables in Azadpur Mandi, Mr Gupta said that potato is available at the rate of `3.75 per kg, onions at `8 per kg, tomatoes at `8 per kg, cauliflower at `4.75 per kg, cabbage at `8 per kg, carrot at `3 per kg, pumpkin at `10 per kg, green peas at `10 per kg, lemon at `12.50 per kg. However, he said that these vegetables are being sold in the retail markets at exorbitant rates, with onions selling at `60 per kg, tomatoes `35 per kg, cauliflower `20 per kg, cabbage `20 per kg, green peas `30 per kg, cucumber `30 per kg, carrot `15 per kg. “There is no trace of price control and anti-hoarding department of Delhi government,” added Mr Gupta.
