Govt, hospital launch organ donation drive
In an effort to encourage families of brain dead patients to donate organs of their loved ones, a city-based hospital has launched a campaign to create awareness on cadaver transplantation.
BLK Super Speciality Hospital and the Delhi government have asked families to come forward and take a pledge on organ donation.
Dr Aditya Pradhan, senior consultant, urology, BLK Super Speciality Hospital said, “One brain dead patient can help seven patients in critical stages to help them lead normal lives.”
According to the statistics, thousands of patients in India die for want of organ donors. Recent data states that 1.25 lakh Indians died in road accidents in 2011 — and only less than 20,000 donated their organs. Kidney, Liver, heart, lung, pancreas, small bowel and sometimes skin etc. are some of the organs that can be donated for an organ transplant.
Dr Pradhan said, “There has been a renewed interest in cadaver transplant because of the huge gap in supply-demand in chronic renal failure patient requiring transplant. The only potential remedy to this problem is the cadaver transplant. Within India, for varied reasons, this has not taken off to the extent of its potential.”
