Govt marks two shelters for destitute
After getting strict orders from the Delhi high court to set up shelter homes for destitute pregnant woman, the city government on Wednesday said it has identified two shelter homes for them for their due care and upkeep.
Appearing before a division bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, standing counsel Najmi Waziri submitted that two community centres, one in Kalkaji and the other in Jahangirpuri, have been identified for shelter homes for pregnant destitute women.
The government, however, made it clear before the court that it would take some time to provide infrastructure at the shelters, adding that two NGOs: All-India Womens’ Conference (AIWC) and Young Womens’ Christian Association were assigned to admit such women in the shelters.
The bench also directed the government to either appoint any officer or agency to co-ordinate between the two shelters.
Pulling up the Delhi government for its failure to provide shelter homes, the court had last week directed the authorities to earmark at least two shelter homes equipped with medical facilities to cater to destitute pregnant women.
The court has initiated suo motu action on the basis of newspaper reports about a woman dying on the pavement after giving birth to a child due to lack of medical care on July 26, last year.
