Govt to raid onion hoarders
The Delhi government on Tuesday decided to launch raids against hoarders to check the runaway onion prices. The government also asked officials to place direct purchase order from Nashik through Nafed, though the chief minister Sheila Dikshit stated that the government could decide to sell onion if the situation demands so.
The Delhi government is hopeful that with the arrival of 60 truck loads of onion from Nashik in the next two days, the prices would come down.
Emerging out of a review meeting, which was attended by senior officials, Ms Dikshit told reporters that a team of food and supplies department officials would launch raids in various wholesale markets and mandis from Wednesday to check if any hoarding or black-marketing of onions is going on.
Meanwhile, onions continue to be dearer with many retail markets in the city having reported of it selling in the range of `70-80.
However, Ms Dikshit ruled out the government selling onion as has been the case in the recent years and stated “first we will observe the arrangements that we are making now to deal with the situation, and if the need arises, we will also open such centres”.
However, the chief minister claimed that the onion prices have fallen by almost 13.5 per cent since Monday and the stocks have increased.
