Govt to reconstruct collapsed overbridge
The Delhi government is learnt to have decided to go ahead with the reconstruction of the foot over-bridge near the JLN stadium which had collapsed just days before the Commonwealth Games.
Senior PWD officials stated that the decision to go ahead with the construction of the foot over-bridge has been taken and the work could begin soon. Though an enquiry into the collapse of the FOB had put the blame on the British company, the reconstruction would be done by keeping the same technology and the same firm.
“The city government will not bear any additional cost. The FOB will be built by the contractor, who will take the additional cost,” stated the PWD officials.
Just days before the Commonwealth Games had to kick-start, the FOB had come crashing down, which had left about 27 workers injured. The probe into the incident had put the blame on the technology on which the FOB was being built. However, the city government had to take the help of the Army to build a temporary FOB just days before the mega sporting event unfolded.
Senior officials stated that the British firm Macalloy has agreed to supervise the reconstruction of the FOB, while they added that the technology is being used world over. The PWD had also faced criticism after the collapse of the FOB, with the probe panel having stated that the agency had failed in its supervisory role. However, no action has been taken yet against any of the PWD officials.
