Govt to revive subsidised flour scheme for citizens
In a bid to provide some relief to the citizens burdened by rise in prices of food items, the city government plans to soon revive a scheme under which subsidised wheat flour will be sold at over 400 outlets at around `14 per kg.
The decision to revive the scheme came after Union minister of state for food and civil supplies K.V. Thomas at a meeting with chief minister Sheila Dikshit agreed to her request to provide additional quota of subsidised wheat to Delhi.
Rising prices of essential commodities in the city was identified as one of the major reasons for the crushing defeat of the Congress in the municipal polls last month.
Officials said chief minister Sheila Dikshit requested the Union minister to make available more than 8,000 metric tonnes of wheat to the city so that the “popular scheme” can be launched once again.
The Delhi government had launched the scheme of selling subsidised wheat flour in July 2009 and it continued till October last year.
The scheme called “Bhagidari Atta” had to be discontinued after Centre stopped providing subsidised wheat flour to Delhi.
Officials said 10 kg packets of superior quality wheat flour would be made available at 400 outlets of Kendriya Bhandar, NAFED and NCCF (National Consumer Cooperative Federation) for `139 as against the market rate of `180 to `250.
“We will soon announce the date of revival of the scheme,” said Ms Dikshit, hoping that the sale of “Bhagidari Atta” will provide a much needed relief to all sections of people in the city.
