Govt trucks to sell onions across city
In order to ensure that the cheaper onion being sold by the government from fixed outlets of Mother Dairy, Nafed and other agencies reaches a larger section of population, the government is likely to rope in trucks that would go into various colonies in the city selling onions at cheaper rate. The service may start from Monday. On the other hand, the onion traders are believed to be in foul mood following regular raids being carried out by government agencies to prevent and detect hoarding. They are threatening to go on strike if the situation continues to be the same.
Initially, the Delhi government had said that Mother Dairy, Nafed and other outlets would sell the best quality onions for `40 per kg and the cheaper variety at around `20 per kg. “However, the scheme did not materialise as people might have thought that onions sold at these outlets are not of good quality,” said a senior city government official.
Later, it also came to the knowledge that people in many city areas are not aware that the outlets are selling cheaper onions, added the official. “To make sure that cheaper onion is accessible to people, the city government has now decided to send trucks to various areas from Monday.
The officials confirmed that the onion traders have warned to go on strike from Tuesday.
“Officials are talking to various groups of onion traders to make sure that the strike does not take place,” said sources.
