Grieving family held hostage, robbed
In a bizarre incident, five unidentified assailants barged into a residence in Saraswati Vihar, northwest Delhi, and held a family and relatives attending a condolence meeting hostage at gun-point before decamping with jewellery worth lakhs of rupees.
The incident occurred at around 12.20 pm in Saraswati Vihar on Tuesday. Dipak Khanija, a garment trader in Jasola, lives with his family at B-820, Saraswati Vihar. The police said Khanija’s grandfather, Kundan Lal, 96, had passed away and the family had called a condolence meeting on Tuesday.
“Khanija had gone to Rani Bagh with his wife and children while his parents, grandmother and other relatives, who had come to attend the condolence meeting, were at home when five assailants barged into the house,” said a police official. The police said three assailants entered through the main door holding arms while two others came through a rear door.
“The assailants locked the residence and then asked all the victims to assemble in a room. Khanija’s cousin Nikit and his father Om Prakash were held at gun-point. The assailants then asked the females to part with their jewellery to which they obliged out of fear,” the official said.
In the meantime, Om Prakash pushed an assailant and locked himself in a room. He immediately made a PCR call and informed the police about the incident. “Sensing that the police might catch them, the assailants escaped with the booty,” said the official. The police said three more accomplices of the assailants were waiting on two scooters and a car outside the house. “We have registered a case of dacoity and investigations are on,” joint commissioner of police, northern range, Karnal Singh said. Sources said the assailants had covered their faces with scarves and handkerchiefs to conceal their identity.
