Gurgaon gets closer as Metro flagged off
Gurgaon Metro covered its final stretch from Central Secretariat to Qutub Minar and brought the millennium city closer to north and central Delhi by cutting the travel time to 50 minutes from two hours by road. The 12.53-km fully underground corridor that passes through some of the densely-populated areas of south Delhi, which have been deprived of the Metro comfort till now, was integrated with the already operational Qutub Minar-HUDA City Centre line.
Urban development minister S. Jaipal Reddy inaugurated the corridor and flagged off the first train from the Udyog Bhawan station in the presence of Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and DMRC managing director E. Sreedharan.
As south Delhi got Metro connectivity, the 78-year-old Delhi Metro chief, who lives at the Metro Enclave in Pushp Vihar in Saket in south Delhi, hopped onto a Metro train from Rajiv Chowk station. After taking the Metro from Barakhamba Road, he deboarded at the Rajiv Chowk station to take another train to travel to Saket station.
The distance of 45 km distance from Jehangirpuri to Gurgaon will be covered in just 80 minutes which will save time and money. While from Central Secretariat, it will take only 50 minutes. The maximum fare on the Jehangirpuri-HUDA City Centre line is `29. Ms Dikshit lauded the efforts of DMRC chief E. Sreedharan for his meticulous execution of the Metro projects in the city. “With the opening of this line, passengers can travel from right here to Gurgaon in a single train,” she said.
Mr Jaipal Reddy said, “With the opening of Central Secretariat-Qutub Minar stretch, one more milestone has been achieved in Delhi Metro’s triumphant march.”
For the first time the Metro passed through localities in south Delhi, like INA Market, AIIMS, Green Park, Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar and Saket.
