HC directs GTB Hospital to treat boy free of cost

Moved by the plight of a six-year-old boy, who has a blockage in his heart, the Delhi high court on Friday directed G.B. Pant Government Hospital to provide him free treatment.

After going through a petition filed by the boy’s father Suresh Chand through his lawyer Ashok Aggarwal, Justice S. Muralidhar said, “The boy (Aman) is directed to appear before the medical superintendent, G.B. Pant (Hospital), Delhi, on May 28, for his medical check-up.”
Saying that Aman should be examined by a senior cardiologist and appropriate treatment should be given to him at the earliest free of cost, the court asked the hospital to file a status report on May 30.
The petition said, “Aman was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on May 13, where the doctors, after conducting tests on him, asked him (Suresh) to deposit `25,000 as his child was suffering from critical heart disease (a blockage in heart) and they needed to operate him immediately.”
Unable to arrange the required amount, Suresh brought a request letter from the district magistrate of his native district in Uttar Pradesh but the AIIMS authorities refused to consider it.
Seeing no ray of hope, Suresh approached the Delhi HC, seeking a direction to the AIIMS authorities to provide free treatment to his child.
