HC tells DU to act if teachers don’t resume classes

Directing the Delhi University teachers to start taking classes from Tuesday by following the new semester system, the Delhi high court on Monday made it clear that if they do not join duty, the authorities can hire ad-hoc teachers.

A division bench comprising Delhi high court Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Manmohan directed the DU teachers to start taking classes and follow the new semester system as examinations are scheduled to begin December 6.
The court also made it clear that if the teachers deviate, the colleges could treat the period as “absenteeism” and take action as per the law.
The division bench said, “Education cannot be thrown away into Pacific ocean by these teachers who are taking law into their hands by going on strike. The rule of law has to prevail and teachers are bound to follow the instructions of the university administration.”
The bench directed all the 31 colleges, in which semester system was to be implemented, to inform the university in case of any difficulty so that alternative arrangements could be made.
The court also allowed the university to consider the deferment of the examination date in consultation with the colleges and the University Grant Commission (UGC).
Asking the DU to constitute a core committee to monitor the situation, the judges asked the UGC to nominate a reputed educationist as a member.

Appeal for use of low radiation source in labs
Mumbai, Nov. 15: Delhi University has appealed to the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board to allow it to use weak radiation sources for academic purposes. “The university has submitted the final report very recently and has now approached us asking for use of some weak radiation sources to carry on the academic work, but we have said we will consider it in due course of time after doing all required regulatory inspection in the university department,” AERB chairman S.S. Bajaj said on Monday. —PTI

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
