High fees for car registration?
The Delhi cabinet is likely to take up the issue of increasing the registration fee for different categories of vehicles on Monday.
The proposal, about which the government had informed during the budget, is aimed at creating different slabs of registration fees for different kinds of vehicles. The cars i
n the luxury segment are likely to face the biggest hike and so would be the high-end middle segment cars. However, the lower-end small car segment may not get affected much.
After increasing liquor rates and property registration fees that are likely to add to the tune of Rs 450 crores to the government coffers, it hopes to make another Rs 500 crores by increasing the registration fees for different categories of vehicles.
The current rates of registration fees in the capital is quite low as compared to some of the neighbouring cities.
The cash-strapped government has been on the look out for ways and means to increase its revenue. It had only a surplus of Rs 200 crores left largely on account of capital investments made for Commonwealth Games 2010 preparations.
