‘Hope verdict proves a deterrent’

Chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday welcomed the fast-track court decision of death penalty to all the four accused in the December 16 gangrape-murder case and expressed satisfaction with the conviction.

“I welcome the judgment. Justice has prevailed. The fast-track court has delivered justice expeditiously. I hope the judgment would prove to be a deterrent,” she told reporters here. However, she ignored questions on policing and women’s security in the capital.
Ms Dikshit and her MP son Sandeep Dikshit were critical of the then police commissioner Neeraj Kumar. Ms Dikshit had met Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and parliamentary affairs minister Kamalnath seeking strict action against “top brass” of Delhi police. Mr Sandeep Dikshit had demanded ouster of Mr Kumar citing deteriorating law and order situation and lathicharge on the protesters.
Former police commissioner Neeraj Kumar said he is absolutely delighted with the judgment.
“It is vindication of the excellent work done by our investigators and prosecutors. We made it clear that we do not leave any point and we had clinching evidence. I am sure it will withstand the test of judicial scrutiny even by higher courts without any doubt,” Mr Kumar said.
The Delhi police again patted its back as joint commissioner of police (southeast) Vivek Gogia said, “We took scientific investigations to the highest levels (in this case). We gathered DNA samples from nail scrapping and developed dental patterns from the bite marks. I think it is the first case in which odontological forensics —a way of identifying people by their teeth — was used. We had sent the samples to an expert in Dharwad, Karnataka from where we got positive finding which was produced before the court as evidence.”
“We consider this judgment as a lesson. The points which have been appreciated by the court will be incorporated in our training modules. Although different cases have different dimensions, but still, we will try to implement the new techniques,” he added.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
