Infant dies at MCD health centre
A 22-day-old infant died within two hours of being administered vaccines at MCD’s maternity and child welfare centre in Tri Nagar in north Delhi on Wednesday. The MCD has constituted a probe committee to identify the reasons for the death of the infant and fix responsibility on the erring staff if any. The incident was reported on
Wednesday morning, when one Teji Devi, a resident of Lekhupur in Tri Nagar area, had gone to the maternity and child welfare centre run by the MCD to get her infant, who was born on November 24, vaccinated for DPT and other diseases.
However, within two hours of being administered the vaccine, the child died.
Subsequently, the local police was informed and the body was sent for post-mortem.
Preliminary post-mortem report indicates that the child had developed rashes all over his body and his eyes had dried up, while the skin had turned red. These are all suspected to be symptoms of drug reaction in the body.
The report also indicates that the child may have been suffering from diarrhoea.
Usually, no vaccine is administered to children if they are not completely medically fit. It appears, therefore, that the doctors at the maternity and child welfare centre may not have bothered to check the health of the infant before administering the vaccine.
Meanwhile, the inquiry committee headed by municipal health officer N.K. Yadav, is probing if the vaccines were stored properly in the refrigerator at the required temperature. All samples of the vaccines at the centre have been seized. The local police is also looking into the matter.
