The Delhi police has arrested an Iraqi national for allegedly raping his live-in partner. The incident was reported from the Kalkaji area of southwest Delhi on Friday night.
The accused, identified as Javed Mohammad, 30, is a student of Jamia Millia Islamia. He is pursuing postgraduation in science at Jamia Millia.
According to the police, the 29-year-old victim approached the Kalkaji police station on Friday night and lodged a complaint.
“The victim has complained that she was in a live-in relationship with the accused who started cheating on her. We have lodged an FIR under Sections 376 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code,” additional commissioner of police (southeast) P. Karunakaran told this newspaper.
A senior police officer said the accused, Javed, came to India in 2011 and started living in a rented accommodation at Kalkaji DDA flats.
“The victim knows Javed since the last one year. She is also a resident of Kalkaji area and works in a private firm. She alleged that Javed promised her of marriage and they started living together. On Friday night, the duo had a tussle over Javed’s alleged relationship with some other girl from the same college. The victim alleged that Javed threatened to kill her and flee to Iraq,” said the official quoting the victim’s complaint.
The police then took the victim for a medical examination and the medico legal-certificate confirmed rape.
Subsequently, the police lodged an FIR against the accused for raping the victim on the promise of marriage.
A police team was sent to the residence of the accused and he was arrested, the officer added.
The police has also confiscated the passport of the accused Iraqi national Javed Mohammad.
