It rains chaos on roads again

All the major roads in the city, particularly in the central and south zones, remained submerged in the early part of Saturday, following a heavy downpour. There were at least two instances of roads caving-in and nearly 20 trees were uprooted across the city. Waterloggi-ng was reported from nearly 100 places. The weatherman said that the city received 62.5 mm of rain since Saturday morning and more is in store on Sunday.

The heavy rains also meant that another crucial day was lost with respect to the Commonwealth Games-related works. At many places, the labourers could be seen idling in some sort of shade or were simply absent from the sites. There was subdued activity later in the day, when the weather improved. However, the work force was not as strong as is usually the case.
According to the MCD, waterlogging complaints were received from 94 places, which included: Stretch opposite Model Town police station, Mahipalpur-Vasant Kunj, Jakhira flyover, stretches opposite Amar Colony and Sangam Vihar police stations, Jasola Road, Mori Gate-Baraf Khana, Lodhi Road, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, ISBT Kashmere Gate, Mayapuri Chowk. Nizamuddin west, Malviya Nagar, the stretch near Jahangirpuri Metro station and New Friends Colony.
There were reports that two persons, a woman and a rickshawpuller, were injured in Lajpat Nagar area when a tree fell on them. However, the police said that while the tree did fall, nobody was injured.
Two huge craters were created as the road from Savitri flyover towards Chirag Dilli flyover caved-in around 11.30 am. A truck, involved in some earth work along the side pavements, got stuck in one of the craters, while a Honda City car got stuck in the other one. Luckily, nobody was hurt. The traffic between AIIMS and Yusuf Sarai was also badly affected with road caving-in opposite Indian Oil Building. Aurobindo Marg too was heavily waterlogged.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
