Jamia submits report on rain harvesting
The Jamia Millia Islamia has submitted a report on the draft masterplan for rain harvesting measures in neighbouring Gurgaon. The report envisages providing more than 250 “injection wells”, among other measures.
According to a University spokesperson, the report on the feasibility and design of rainwater harvesting was submitted to the municipal commissioner of Gurgaon on Monday.
The report has been based on thorough study of the relevant parameters like rainfall, ground water condition and behaviour, geology of the area and hydro-geological condition. Prepared by the department of civil engineering, the report also suggests rainwater harvesting measures on at least 30 per cent of the total roof area and also 30 per cent of the roads. At least 40 per cent of the total area under vegetation should also be used for rainwater harvesting, the report suggests. Further, the report has suggested that there should be at least 265 injection wells in 11 zones of the municipal area of Gurgaon. Use of modern techniques, creation of structures in depression areas in the absence of storm water drains has also been suggested in the report. The neighbouring city, though high in value in terms of real estate, has been facing problems related to basic issues like availability of drinking water. The ground water level is depleting fast due to excess exploitation without any provision for recharging it.
The Gurgaon authorities had commissioned the university to carry out a feasibility report.
