Jaslok blood bank on a 15-day shutdown
From Tuesday, owing to the suspension order by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month, the Jaslok Hospital blood bank will not be functional for 15 days (till April 10). The hospital authorities, however, claimed that they were prepared for the suspension and have tie-ups with several blood banks in the area to continue treatment of patients.
The suspension order against the blood bank was passed following the death of leukaemia patient Deepti Makhijani, 21 who was transfused the wrong blood group blood on December 8 at Jaslok Hospital. Meanwhile, the doctors at the hospital have denied the negligence and cited a complete organ failure as the cause of death. “We have written to the ministry of food and drug administration for a stay on the suspension. They have not sent us a reply yet,” said a senior official on condition of anonymity.
Now, as part of the suspension, the hospital will not be allowed to store any blood in their bank. The hospital will also not be allowed to crosscheck the blood group of patients who need transfusion, a procedure that is normally undertaken by the blood bank. The hospital requires 50-60 bottles of blood on a daily basis. “We are prepared for the suspension. We have tie-ups with various hospitals around the area — Breach Candy, Saifee — among others. Blood banks such as the Red Cross Blood Bank have agreed to help us. None of the planned surgeries will be cancelled,” said the official. He added that with the current tie-ups, the hospital could even manage cases of emergency that may come by.
