Key roads near CP shut today
Commuters faced problems on Saturday after key roads and two of the Metro stations were closed for Commonwealth Games events in the Connaught Place areas. Commuters faced problems as the 20-km walk event was staged in the area with Ashoka Road, Red Cross Road, Jai Singh Road and Parliament Street remaining closed from Friday midnight till 10.30 am on Saturday. More trouble await commuters heading towards Connaught Place areas as the cycling events of the Commonwealth Games are scheduled for Sunday in the areas.
For the 165-km cycling event on Sunday, traffic will be blocked at Sansad Marg, Rafi Marg, Janpath, Talkatora Road and some other routes in New Delhi areas from Saturday midnight till 6 pm on Sunday, the police stated on Saturday. The traffic advisory, however, said the New Delhi Railway Station will remain accessible. However, those heading to the New Delhi Railway stations to catch trains may face some trouble and may have to depend on the Metro services or take longer routes to avoid the roads which have been made out of bound for the traffic due to the cycling events. Meanwhile, even the Central Secretariat and Patel Chowk Metro Stations remained totally closed till 10 am, while some of the gates of the Rajiv Chowk station were also closed. Commuters heading towards CP from South Delhi were the most hard hit, while those going to areas near the Parliament Street and Patel Chowk also faced problems.
Traffic jams were reported from across the city on roads which have Commonwealth Games lanes. Despite Saturday being a lean day, peak hour traffic was reported to be quite heavy. Dhaula Kuan flyover, Mathura Road, ITO, Teen Murti Marg, August Kranti Marg and parts of Ring Road reported traffic jams.
The police on Saturday stated that 152 people were issued challans for intruding into the Games lanes. More than 1,200 people have so far been issued challans so far for intruding into the exclusive Games lanes. People are still finding it difficult to identify the Games lanes and are straying into the lanes unintentionally.
