Kidnappers panic, shoot victim dead
The 28-year-old son of a senior advocate, who worked as an assistant in the legal cell of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and was kidnapped on Monday evening, was found shot dead in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh.
DCP (central) Vivek Kishore had told the media on Monday that it “appeared that the victim, Rakesh Ahlawat, had staged the abduction himself to extort money from his father”. However it turned out that the victim was abducted from Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg by one of his associates Anadil and his accomplice Alam and taken in a car to neighbouring Noida where he was forcibly made to consume liquor.
“The two assailants then assaulted him severely after which they took away his ATM card in the hope that he would be having substantial money in his account. When they found that there was mere `8,500 in the account, they became agitated and assaulted him again and made him call his father. The victim was constantly making phone calls to the police while he was being taken to Noida and further into Uttar Pradesh,” a police source said.
The assailants then demanded a ransom of `50 lakhs from his father Ramratan Ahlawat who managed to bring down the ransom amount to `25 lakhs. However, when they realised that they could come under the police scanner, the victim was smothered and shot dead. The assailants threw his body in a sugarcane field near Sambal Road in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, and escaped,” a source said.
“When we put Rakesh’s phone on surveillance, we found that its location was changing frequently. It is an unusual phenomenon which professional criminals often avoid,” Mr Kishore had said.
The victim’s body was recovered from UP by the Delhi police on Friday and the two accused have been arrested. The victim was abducted on Monday evening from outside Manak Bhavan, located at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg.
