Lane trial adds to woes, cops to finetune plan
Even as long traffic snarls have been reported during the trial runs for the dedicated CWG lanes that have begun barely a month before the Games, the Delhi police maintained that its plans were in place and the entire scheme of the dedicated lanes will get further fine tuned.
The first trial run for the dedicated Games lane during the rush hour was undertaken on some of the busiest stretches from 8 am to 10 am. The rush hour traffic snarls and confusion is not an unfamiliar sight for Delhiites but with one more lane squeezed on roads like NH-24, Maa Anandmayee Marg near Kalkaji and another major stretch in New Delhi area, the problem seemed to have become more acute. However, traffic police helpline maintained there was no problems as such and the traffic was more or less smooth on all the four stretches.
Delhi police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said there was nothing wrong with the exclusive lane scheme. “It is wrong to suggest that the trials should have begun earlier. In fact, people are asking why these have been started so early. We are learning from each of the trial runs and the plan will be further fine tuned,” said Mr Bhagat.
Transportation expert S.P. Singh, senior fellow of the Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training, said there was little point in talking about whether things could have been planned better or earlier. “For the next four weeks, we will have to live with the thought that our guests are important and they should not be hassled. We, being the hosts, should be prepared to compromise, as we do to accommodate a guest in our homes,” he said.
