Lawyers want HC to take cognisance y
Outraged over the gangrape of a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus here, a group of women lawyers approached the Delhi high court on Tuesday urging it to take cognisance of the matter and monitor the probe in the case.
The group comprising around 25 women lawyers mentioned the incident before a bench of justices S.K. Kaul and Vipin Sanghi who assured them that they were looking into the “brazen” and “unfortunate” incident. “We are very disturbed. It was a brazen attempt by some persons who think that they can play with the law and order... Strong signals must be sent to the perpetrators of this unfortunate incident,” the bench said.
“We have also seen the newspapers and discussed among us also. Please give us some time. We are looking into it,” the bench said after the women lawyers urged the court to take suo moto connisance of the incident and monitor the probe into it. The women lawyers said that the court should not only monitor the probe but also pass guidelines to ensure safety of women at public places and in means of public transport. A fast track court be also established to expedite trials in such cases, they demanded. “We have already discussed what has to be done. It troubles us all. Whatever required to be done, we would do. Wait for a day or so,” the bench said. Justice Kaul also gave the lawyers the liberty to file a PIL.
