Main accused in police net
The Delhi police has reportedly picked up the main suspect in the Shobhit Modi murder case from Kusumpur Pahari near south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area on Friday.
Police sources said the accused, identified as Deepak Malik, was held from his residence and his arrest is likely to be confirmed on Saturday. The sources also said that the blood-stained clothes of the accused, which he was wearing at the time of the incident, have been recovered from his house. However, the knife used in stabbing the victim has not been traced so far.
“Deepak and one of his associates had an argument with Shobhit on the night of May 5 when Shobhit was returning home from a nearby mall. The argument turned violent and the two accused allegedly tried to rob him. When Shobhit resisted, the two stabbed him and escaped from the spot,” a police source said.
Shobhit’s body was discovered by a security guard and the matter was brought to the notice of the police following which a case was registered.
The police questioned over 400 suspects including Shobhit’s friends, TSR drivers, vendors and history-sheeters in the area to crack the case.
It was not immediately clear how the breakthrough was achieved.
The police is now looking for Deepak’s associate who is absconding and is believed to have hidden the weapon of offence. “We are conducting raids at certain places. His associate has been identified and he will be arrested soon,” a source said.
20-year-old Shobhit Modi, a student of Manav Rachna University in Faridabad, was stabbed just a few hundred metres from his Vasant Kunj residence.
