Man gets 20-yr jail for killing DDA gardener
A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years’ jail for murdering a gardener and robbing him of his mobile phone and money, with a Delhi court terming it as a rare case that resulted in conviction only on “electronic evidence.”
While sentencing Mohinder Sharma, additional sessions judge (ASJ) Kamini Lau said the state would not grant any remission to the convict and not release him before he actually serves 20 years in jail. “I am of a considered opinion that this case cannot be put on the same pedestal as other ordinary murder cases. It can be easily classified as a rare case which calls for exercising of alternative (sentencing) options by court,” said ASJ Lau, who also imposed a fine of `1.02 lakh on the convict.
Sharma, involved in 15 other criminal cases, had murdered Vadivale, a gardener with the DDA in May 2009.
“Convict Sharma is a desperate criminal for whom life has no value and he does hesitate in taking law in his hands and ruthlessly silences his victims at slightest resistance as has happened in the present case. The details of Sharma’s involvement show how he has graduated in crime over the years from being a local criminal involved in petty thefts, chain snatching and extortion to a professional robber and killer,” the judge said.
According to the police, as Vadivale resisted Sharma’s bid to rob him, the latter stabbed him to death. He destroyed the SIM card of the mobile and began using the cell. Sharma was caught after the mobile phone was put on surveillance with the help of its unique IMEI number and his location was traced.
