Man held for cheating merchant navy aspirants
A 37-year-old graduate was arrested here for allegedly duping several unemployed youth by promising them jobs in the merchant navy during the last 10 years, the police said.
The accused, identified as Gurusharan Singh, used to charge Rs 7 to Rs 8 lakh from each aspirant, additional commissioner of police (central) Devesh Chandra Srivastava said, adding he was allegedly running the racket for 10 years.
“He was arrested from UP’s Mathura following a probe into a complaint filed by one Himanshu Gaba, who claimed that Mr Singh cheated him of several lakhs of rupees by promising him job in the merchant navy after completing course from his institute,” he said.
Mr Singh even sent the complainant to Cyprus. However, as soon as he landed in Cyprus, he was detained by the customs officials for travelling on fake documents and deported to India. “The accused failed to provide him the promised job and also refused to return the amount paid by the complainant,” Mr Srivastava said.
During investigations, he said, it came to light that Mr Singh used to give advertisements in newspapers regarding courses offered by his institute.
“Mr Gaba had paid around Rs 7 lakhs. After completing the course, the company also offered an onboard training in Hyderabad. After completion of training, the complainant requested him for a job. After this, Mr Singh started avoiding him and shifted his office. However, Mr Gaba traced the new office and asked him to honour his promise of job. Mr Singh offered him a job in Iraq but he was reluctant to go to there,” Mr Srivastava added. Later, Mr Singh offered him a job in Cyprus.
Mr Singh was also previously involved in two cheating cases registered in Delhi and Varanasi.
