A youth was shot and critically injured in southeast Delhi’s Kalkaji area on Thursday afternoon when he resisted an attempt by two armed bikers to snatch the gold chain of his mother. The bikers managed to escape.
The police said the incident took place at around 12.30 pm when the victim Rohit, who runs a store in the area, had gone to the main market of Kalkaji with his mother Durshana Wadhwa.
“The two were making some purchases when two bikers wearing helmets and riding a Bajaj Pulsar appeared at the spot. The pillion rider attempted to snatch the gold chain of the woman,” a source said.
Seeing her mother in trouble, Rohit caught the assailant’s hand and tried to drag him down from the motorcycle.
“The assailant drew out a revolver and shot at Rohit,” additional commissioner of police (southeast) Ajay Chaudhary said.
He said Rohit received a gunshot injury in his shoulder and was left writhing in pain at the spot while the two assailants managed to escape.
However, they were not able to snatch the gold chain of the woman.
Some shopkeepers and passersby, who were taken by surprise at the pace with which the incident took place, tried to give them a chase but the assailants managed to escape from the area despite the city being on a high alert. A call was made to the police control room at around 12.40 pm and the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where his condition is stated to be out of danger.
The police later informed the victim’s father K.L. Wadhwa and recorded the statements of the victim and his mother. Sources said the assailants were riding a stolen motorcycle. A case has been registered at the Kalkaji police station and further probe is on.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
