Many accreditation passes ‘missing’
The Delhi police has received several complaints of theft and loss of accreditation passes issued to volunteers and officials participating in the ongoing Commonwealth Games, raising security concerns as two incidents of impersonation, where the accused tried to get into stadiums using passes issued to different persons, were reported last week
The police sources said at least three complaints of theft/loss have been lodged at Tilak Marg police station over the last week in which the complainants stated that the accreditation passes issued by the Organising Committee were either lost or stolen. Sources said that non-cognisable reports (NCR) have been registered and investigations are on.
The Lodhi colony police station, under which the main venue of the Games Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium falls, has also received three complaints and NCRs have been issued. The sources revealed that the complaints were filed by athletes and volunteers participating in the Games.
What has raised alarm in the security establishment is that the cards can be used by miscreant or terror elements to mar the Games. On October 6, three people were arrested in separate incidents at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Complex and Talkatora Stadium for trying to sneak in using accreditation cards issued to other people. The police has registered two cases regarding these incidents. In both the cases, the accused were lured to work at the stadiums by the contractor who had got passes issued in the name of verified people.
A senior police official said that the issue of lost accreditation passes falling into wrong hands doesn’t assume significance, “The photograph of the person in whose name the pass is issued is pasted on it. It will be impossible to make it through the security cover without being detected,” the official said.
