Markets see rush after Games lull
The pre-Diwali festive shopping fever appears to have finally caught up with Delhiites. All major market places in the capital reported huge turnout of shoppers on Saturday leading to traffic jam in surrounding areas. With Diwali just a fortnight away, shopkeepers too look all geared up to cash in on the shopping frenzy.
“There has been a long lull in the markets as heightened security arrangements for the Commonwealth Games had resulted in people avoiding to venture out in the markets. Now, they are coming in big numbers. We hope to make for the losses of the Navratri season,” said Rajesh Khurana, a shopkeeper in the Lajpat Nagar market.
The Confederation of All-India Traders (CAIT) in a report released just two days after the conclusion of the Games had stated that business in various markets in the city had gone down by about 30 to 40 per cent due to the unprecedented security arrangement.
