MCD to act tough on defaulters
The MCD is planning to take tough action on the property tax defaulters. It is also planning to simplify the property tax return form for the benefit of the payers.
Following a meeting with senior officials of the assessment and collection department, the chairman of the property tax committee, Ved Prakash Gupta, told reporters h
ere on Tuesday that the officers have been asked to request the people to come forward and pay their taxes in time and avail the rebate. However, if they fail to do so, the corporation would take tough action, which may also include attachment of properties. The MCD hopes to bring nearly 20 lakh property tax payers in the tax net.
The corporation will also go tough on the government establishments and collect taxes from Delhi Metro, DDA, postal department, railways and oil companies. Armed with a Supreme Court ruling favouring the corporation’s move to tax these establishments, the MCD hopes to rake in much needed revenue from these sources too.
Mr Gupta also instructed the officials to shorten the property tax return form so that the tax payers find it easy to fill it. At present, the forms run into several pages leading to confusion in calculation of the exact tax under the unit area method.
The MCD has also made it clear that it would not come out with any amnesty scheme this year as it was felt that enough time has been given to defaulters to clear up their dues.
