MCD to be split into 3 units?
In a move to broker a compromise between chief minister Sheila Dikshit and agitating Delhi Congress office-bearers and councillors, the Delhi Cabinet on Wednesday has sought a fresh proposal from the urban development department on splitting the MCD into three units in place of five smaller bodies as proposed earlier.
The Delhi Cabinet met on Wednesday after chief minister Sheila Dikshit, DPCC chief J.P. Aggarwal and party in-charge in Delhi, Choudhary Virendra Singh met Mr Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
Sources said that the chief minister was asked to reconsider the earlier proposal to divide the MCD into five smaller units by taking into account the concerns of the councillors. The Cabinet had approved the proposal which had triggered protest from the Congress councillors and party office-bearers.
“Delhi Cabinet has deliberated on the response of the party high command on the issue. Now it has been decided to call for a fresh proposal from the concerned department on the lines of dividing the civic body into three units instead of five,” sources said.
The fresh proposal, once approved by the Delhi Cabinet, would be submitted before the Congress high command for its nod, added sources. The city government requires approval of the Union home ministry to go ahead with the division of the MCD, which is administered under the Delhi Municipal Act, 1957.
A three-way division appears to be a compromise formula between the party and the chief minister, sources said. Ms Dikshit has been maintaining that she would go ahead with the proposal to split the MCD into smaller units for better and efficient functioning.
