MCD contractors warn of intensifying stir
The MCD contractors, who have been on strike protesting against pending payments of their dues for the past 18 months, have now threatened to bring their counterparts involved in the Games-related projects within the ambit of agitation. They had earlier been claiming that CWG contractors have been kept away from the strike, which began on July 21, in “national interest”.
Delhi municipal contractors association president Sunil Vohra said since their payments have still not been released, they wanted to send a message that works related to the CWG too can be stopped if the payments were not made. “While we have received no payments for the past 18 months, those involved in the CWG projects too have not got their payment in the last five months. They wanted to join the agitation but we kept asking them to keep away as their projects pertained to national interest as the Games was a matter of prestige. However, the MCD is only giving assurance. We want payment,” said Mr Vohra.
Due to the strike, lifting of construction waste in trucks has not been undertaken for the past many days. Also all their vehicles have been removed from MCD stores.
Meanwhile, the MCD officials maintained that the payment will soon be released to the contractors. But the contractors insist that making the payment alone would lead to resolution of crisis. The contractors are planning to hold a protest meeting at the Town Hall, the headquarters of the MCD, on Wednesday.
