MCD discovers mosquito threat
The choice of site for the Commonwealth Games village had come under sharp criticism from the environmentalists who believed it was sacrilege to encroach upon the flood plains of Yamuna river. While they were silenced, the MCD has “discovered” a new reason to say that the site of the Village is not good. Reason, mosquitoes that
will breed in the ditches and potholes of the river bed as rain water will stagnate in them and continue to pose risk to the health of athletes and the delegates staying at the village. The only way out seems to be asking the DDA to fill out the entire terrain by filling up soil.
On a visit to analyse the reasons for continued breeding of mosquitoes, chairman of the MCD’s health committee Mr V.K. Monga, who accompanied by the officials from the Centre, the Delhi government and experts from various institutes dealing in vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria, said, “It was generally felt that the site of the village was not allright from the point of view of mosquito breeding. The area between the river and the village is full of potholes and uneven terrain, which will all get filled up with water during rain and later become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.”
It was pointed out that the flood plain area is controlled by the DDA and Uttar Pradesh flood and irrigation department. “They have been requested to fill up the ditches and potholes with soil to lessen collection of water,” said Mr Monga.
Further, Mr Monga said that a wall being constructed as a view breaker from the side of the National Highway-24 was making access too difficult for the health department staff.
