MCD to divert staff for cleaning Village, stadia
With barely four days for the Common-wealth Games to begin, top authorities at the Centre have handed over the sanitation responsibility to the MCD for all Games venues falling under its jurisdiction. The venues include Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Games Village, and seven other stadia.
However, there are apprehensions that pulling out men from municipal duties may hit the sanitation and cleanliness in the city.
Delhi mayor P.R. Sawhney on Tuesday said that Cabinet secretary K.M. Chandrashekhar, after taking a look at the work being done by the MCD, decided to hand over the responsibility for sanitation at all the Games venues falling under its jurisdiction to the civic agency.
Sources said that nearly 600 men have been deployed at the Games Village and at least 1,500 more would be deployed at various venues.
The MCD, which is taking care of the sanitation and anti-dengue measures at outside the Games Village that was criticised for being “filthy” and “unliveable” is now treating the new responsibility as a shot in its arm.
“Deploying extra men at the Games Village would mean that sanitation workers from various areas will be pulled out at a time when the city is facing outbreak of dengue,” said a senior MCD functionary.
