MCD for drainage action plan to tackle waterlogging
Two days after rain chaos in the city, the MCD on Wednesday dusted its old solution to the problem of waterlogging on Delhi roads. Municipal commissioner K.S. Mehra told the MCD’s standing committee that the MCD was working on a multi-agency coordinated response plan that would effectively tackle the problem of waterlogging.
Mr Mehra told the committee that the government’s flood control department was looking into the aspect of effective drainage action plan for the city, which could be the key to the solution of waterlogging. He also stressed on the need to identify areas prone to waterlogging and take action. The engineering department chief also told the committee that the corporation had carried out desilting work and cleared out 1,58,120 metric tonnes of silt from the drains.
During the meeting, the BJP councillors continued to maintain that the problem occurred only on the roads falling under the jurisdiction of the PWD. The Congress councillors, however, alleged that desilting work was not carried out properly by the MCD staff, which led to the problem when rain came.
Meanwhile, the MCD has decided to adopt “zero tolerance” policy against defacement of walls, potholes, and presence of construction debris on the roads leading to Games stadia, venues and places of historical importance. Works committee chief Jagdish Mamgain, in a meeting with the engineering department, said that Rs 5.4 crores has been sanctioned for vehicles, man power and necessary equipment to lift the construction debris from all the MCD areas.
