MCD engineer jailed for taking bribe
A Municipal Corporation of Delhi engineer, caught taking `20,000 as bribe from a contractor, was sentenced to four years in jail.
“Unfortunately, India ranks prominently high in the list of countries plagued by corruption. Anti-corruption measures in India are perceived by the people to be weak and ineffective,” said special judge V.K. Maheshwari, while sentencing MCD junior engineer Mohd Salman Aquel.
The court convicted the suspended MCD junior engineer for offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Besides sentencing him to four years in jail, it also imposed a fine of `25,000 on him.
Salman was caught in 2009 for demanding `1 lakh from complainant Sushant Mohan Sharma for clearing his bills for the work executed by him.
He later settled at `70,000 and was caught in a trap while accepting `20,000 as part of the bribe.
The court rejected Salman Aquel’s prayer for lenient punishment saying, “Any liberal attitude, shown by imposing meagre sentence or taking too sympathetic view merely on account of lapse of time in respect of such offences will be result wise counterproductive in the long run and against social interest.”
